Exterior Staining
1.Inspect the exterior wood surfaces
Check decks, fences, siding, railings, stairs, pergolas, and other exterior wood surfaces for dirt, mildew, peeling stain, cracks, moisture, rot, or damage.
2. Protect the surrounding area
Cover nearby plants, walls, windows, concrete, siding, outdoor furniture, and fixtures with drop cloths, plastic, and masking materials.
3. Clean the wood
Remove dirt, dust, mildew, grease, and old residue using the appropriate wood cleaner or pressure washing when needed.
4. Remove old stain or loose finish
Strip, scrape, or sand areas with peeling, flaking, or uneven old stain to prepare the surface for a fresh application.
5. Sand the surface
Sand rough areas, edges, and weathered wood to create a smooth, even surface and help the stain absorb properly.
6. Repair damaged areas
Fill cracks, secure loose boards, replace damaged wood, and repair weak spots before staining.
7. Let the wood dry completely
Allow the wood to fully dry after cleaning or washing. Stain should only be applied to dry wood for proper absorption and durability.
8. Choose the right stain
Select the appropriate exterior stain based on the wood type, desired colour, level of transparency, and weather protection needed.
9. Test the stain
Apply a small sample in a discreet area to confirm the colour, absorption, and final appearance before staining the full surface.
10. Apply the first coat
Use a brush, roller, pad, or sprayer to apply the stain evenly, following the direction of the wood grain.
11. Work in sections
Stain small sections at a time to avoid lap marks, uneven colour, or drying lines.
12. Wipe excess stain if needed
Remove extra stain from the surface when required to prevent sticky areas, blotches, or uneven finish.
13. Apply a second coat if recommended
After the first coat dries, apply a second coat if needed for deeper colour, stronger protection, and a longer-lasting finish.
14. Inspect and touch up
Check the surface for missed spots, uneven areas, drips, or colour inconsistencies, and complete any necessary touch-ups.
15. Clean up and final walkthrough
Remove protective coverings, clean the work area, and complete a final walkthrough to ensure a smooth, natural, and professional exterior stain finish.
